The ASU School of Music Javanese Gamelan12:00 noon in Sophomore Square
The gamelan is an Indonesian tuned percussion ensemble associated with traditional theater, dance, and life cycle ceremonies. Instruments consist of hanging and horizontal bronze gongs, metallophones (metal xylophones), a zither, flute, drums, and vocal. The gamelan provides an extraordinary interactive experience for musicians to learn, play, elaborate, improvise, and, especially, interact by ear. Having devoted his sabbatical to the study of this tradition, ethnomusicologist Ted Solís, Professor of Music, School of Music, ASU,organized the School of Music's Javanese gamelan in the Fall of 2003 as a for-credit student ensemble open to all without audition or required prior background of any sort. Members are ASU students, faculty, and community members.PLEASE JOIN US AND
