Greetings Teams,

It's been about four weeks since the last update and A LOT has happened. Just in the past month over 800 VEX teams have played in about 30 Clean Sweep Competitions in 7 different countries and 13 different US States. Many new teams have now qualified for the 2010 VEX Robotics World Championship April 22-24 in Dallas, Texas. This next week will see almost 400 more teams compete in more events spanning the globe, including Canada, England, Puerto Rico and multiple cities in the US.

Online Challenges Being Announced on Monday, December 14

We will be unveiling 6 Online Challenges for 2010 on Monday. These will include a FUTURE Foundation Product Design Challenge, a game Animation Challenge, a Promotional Video Challenge, a Web Site Design Challenge and a new Digital Prototyping Design Challenge presented by Autodesk for users of Autodesk Inventor. All the specific details and information will be announced on Monday.

2010 VEX World Championship and Hotel Information

Many qualified teams have already registered for the 2010 World Championship, and many more teams will qualify in the coming weeks and months. As teams qualify, be sure to register and to book your hotel rooms to ensure you get your spot and get the discounted hotel rates before they fill up. The three hotels offering special World Championship discounts for VEX teams can be found on the event page at on RobotEvents.com.

Event Results and Qualifying Information

Results of events are now being displayed on the RobotEvents.com event pages for each tournament. Teams that have won tournaments or been finalists, have come in 1st or 2nd place in Skills Challenges or won the Excellence Award have qualified for the 2010 VEX World Championship and/or the 2010 CREATE Foundation Championship of the Americas. You can check the qualifying criteria and register for each tournament on their specific event pages on RobotEvents.com.

Now over 2200 Teams and 160 Events

Since our last update almost 400 new teams have registered, raising the total number of teams this season to over 2200. The VEX Robotics Competition is now the largest High School and Middle School Robotics Competition Program in the World, and still the fastest growing! One third of the 160 plus events around the world have already taken place with over 100 events still to come. As the season progresses, robot performance seems to get even more impressive each week - keep up the great work! While many of the upcoming events still have space available, almost 30 competitions have already filled up this season and many more are getting close, so be sure to go online and get your teams registered for any upcoming events you know you want to participate in while there are still spots available.

Our Voice Our Country's user-friendly, interactive and
non-partisan competitions invite college students from
across America to articulate what they believe to be an
urgent national problem, and to identify experts in the field
with achievable solutions. These accessible competitions
put your students' entries before a national audience,
eligible to become a People's Resolution, which would be
delivered to Congress for action, when we start our full process
in 2010.

Our first competition, held this past summer garnered
563 entries from all across America.
Winner Kelsey Price, a freshman at University of Utah
identified the FATA Region of Pakistan as her /Topic/;
and she proposed Hassan Abbas, a former police chief
from that region (now a fellow at Harvard's Kennedy
School of Government and Asia Society) as her
/ProblemSolver./

The story of the winning entry, including Dr. Abbas'
10 point plan to resolve conflict in the FATA region was
picked up by AP, featured in several newspapers, TV news,
on international blogs and online news pages. Honorable
Mention in the Summer competition went to Kelly Novinski at
Florida Atlantic Univeristy, who identified Wetland Preservation
as an urgent national issue.

An early version of the FRC Java software is now available for download at http://first.wpi.edu/FRC/frcjava.html.  Veteran teams, as you enjoy an early look at Java, please support rookie/returning teams in your area who don't have a 2009 control system or robot to utilize during this early release.

Fwd: Public Safety Update

Public Safety Update/Summary of Incidents/November 16-22, 2009

16 November; 9:45am-2:15pm:  A student reported the theft of his bicycle and helmet from the south end of the D building.  The bike had been secured by a cable lock.  The value of the bike and helmet is $320.00.

16 November; 1:05pm:  A campus police officer observed a verbal confrontation in the west parking lot.  A male and female student were arguing over the ownership of a cellular phone and apparently there had been a physical altercation between the two.  A report was forwarded to the Dean of Students.

17 November; 3:58pm:  Safety staff reported to the Testing Center on a report that a person was having a seizure.  An EMT professional was assisting the person and follow-up fire/rescue personnel arrived.  The individual was given a ride to Saint Joseph's for further evaluation/treatment.

18 November; 9:00am:  While performing clinicals off- campus, a dental student sustained a needle stick to her finger.  Medical attention was not required and the student noted that she would follow up with her physician.

NOTE:  If you are planning a road trip over the holiday, ensure that your vehicle is thoroughly checked.  Check the tires/pressure, wiper blades, and all fluid levels.  Get plenty of sleep prior to the trip and make frequent rest stops.  Be safe!

Public Safety Update/Summary of Incidents/November 9-15, 2009

9-10 November; 3:00pm-7:30am:  A student reported that his bicycle was stolen from the bike rack located on the west side of the gymnasium.  The bicycle is valued at $280.00.

12 November; 3:05pm:  Safety staff responded to the cafeteria on a report of shoplifting.  A student was observed taking a beverage and leaving the cafeteria without paying for it.  When questioned by a campus police officer, the student admitted that he had not paid for the drink.  A report was filed and forwarded to the Dean of Students.

NOTE:  The holiday shopping season is upon us.  When shopping, place your purchases in the trunk or out of view until you get home.  Casual thieves will break into vehicles if valuables are observable by looking through vehicle windows.

NOTE:  Faculty members are encouraged to share the weekly updates with their students.

Today marks the beginning of International Education Week.  We will kick off the week with a Parade of Flags highlighting the countries of our students and  Dan Herbst, interim VP of Student Affairs will read the proclamation by our Governor.

        The ASU School of Music Javanese Gamelan 

12:00 noon in Sophomore Square

 The gamelan is an Indonesian tuned percussion ensemble associated with traditional theater, dance, and life cycle ceremonies. Instruments consist of hanging and horizontal bronze gongs, metallophones (metal xylophones), a zither,flute, drums, and vocal. The gamelan provides an extraordinary interactive experience for musicians to learn, play, elaborate, improvise, and,especially, interact by ear.   Having devoted his sabbatical to the study of this tradition,ethnomusicologist Ted Solís, Professor of Music, School of Music, ASU,organized the School of Music's Javanese gamelan in the Fall of 2003 as a for-credit student ensemble open to all without audition or required prior background of any sort. Members are ASU students, faculty, and community members.

It's been an exciting couple of weeks since the last update. More than 200 teams played in 11 different events the past two weeks (in 8 different US states and in Brazil), with many new teams qualifying for the 2010 VEX Robotics World Championship April 22-24 in Dallas, Texas. This next week will see almost 250 teams compete in 7 more events spanning the globe, including the first ever VEX competition in Japan, the Inaugural VEX All-Star Challenge at Disney World, the first VEX Robotics competition in Australia and competitions in 4 additional states (Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana and Massachusetts).

A special note: The Disney All-Star Challenge event is now going to be web cast on Friday and Saturday – the link to the webcast may be found on the home page at RobotEvents.com.

It looks like VEX may become the first High School and Middle School Robotics Competition to ever reach 2000 teams! Regional College Challenge Events Announced

While we initially expected the College Challenge to be a World Championship only tournament this season, a number of universities have asked to host events so many schools can compete regionally and hopefully travel less. We're happy to announce that College Challenge events have been scheduled in California, Maryland, Massachusetts and Texas.

Online Challenges Coming Soon

Many teams have been asking if the new online challenges for this season will be announced soon, and the answer is yes. We expected to launch the new challenges in about two weeks, but we can share with you what some of the returning and new categories of challenges will be for those who want to start to prepare. This year we will again have Promotional Video and Game Animation Challenges along with a new twist to the Product Design Challenge in partnership with the FUTURE Foundation based on creating robots designed to assist with disabilities. Two completely new online challenges will be a new Computer Animated Design Challenge and a new Web Site Design Challenge. More details will be announced and posted online soon.

Dear FTC Mentors and Coaches:

 

An email blast is the best way we know to communicate information to you that is directly related to the success of your team.  It's sometimes a challenge to strike the right balance between not enough information and information overload, and we're sure that sometimes it seems as though we're bombarding you with email.  We want you to know that without some of this important information, your team will not be prepared when they arrive at their event.  We want you and your team to have fun and to be successful at the competitions you attend, so please make sure that you share the information contained in this email with the students on your team.

 

The following information is key to the success of your team:

 

For New Teams:  Getting Started with Tetrix

This presentation provides an introduction to design and programming, and is an excellent way to become familiar with the kit of parts and basic programming concepts.

 

For All Teams:  The Field Controller Station

This software is what your team will run on their computer, and it tells your teams robot when to start and stop in the competition.  A robot will not pass software inspection without this product.

 

For All Teams:  Competition Templates

The template is the framework for your software program.  It helps your robot to communicate with the Field Controller Station.  A robot will not pass software inspection without the appropriate template.

Free Robotics Workshops thanks to team 1492 (in Tempe)

Arizona Community Robotics Team CAUTION (1492) is presenting it annual free pre-season FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) workshops that are open to the public. They will be held at ITT Technical Institute (5005 S Wendler Dr, Tempe, AZ) on Saturday afternoons from 1-3pm. The topics are:

November 7th - Introduction to FIRST - Introducing FIRST, the FRC Build Process, and Team CAUTION

November 14th - FRC Mechanical and Pneumatics Subsystems - components, tools, and skills (NOTE: There are also workshops from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM at DeVry on Nov. 14, 2009.)

November 21st - FRC Programming and Controls - components, tools, and skills

We generally do a presentation for 15-45 minutes followed by a demonstration and/or some hands-on familiarization activities. Students, parents, teachers, and mentors who are new to FRC or who are considering joining and want to get an idea of what is involved in participating in the program are encouraged to attend.

Greetings VEX Teams,

VEX TEAM AND EVENT GROWTH

A few weeks ago we shared that the VEX Robotics Competition program had already grown to over 1300 teams and 150 events around the world. It seems the growth has not slowed down, as the team count exceeded 1600 this past week and even more new events have been added, pushing the total number of VEX competitions to almost 160! This upcoming week there will be 125 different teams participating at 5 more events in California, Florida, Hawaii, Nebraska and Massachusetts. There will be 25 more events in the next 4 weeks - in 13 different states and 4 countries (Brazil, Japan, Colombia and Australia). 10 upcoming events have already filled and are closed for registration now, with a number of other competitions already 80-90% full, so be sure to get your teams signed up soon for any upcoming events you wish to participate in before they fill up.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FIRST GROUP OF QUALIFIERS

We'd like to congratulate the first teams to qualify for the 2010 VEX Robotics World Championship (April 22-24, 2010 in Dallas) and the Championship of the Americas (March 18-20, 2010 in Omaha) at recent events in Hawaii, California and New Hampshire. We've received great feedback from the competitions and are thrilled they've run so smoothly. Special thanks to all the amazing Event Partners organizing and running all tournaments for providing so many affordable opportunities for teams to participate.

VEX ROBOTICS ALL-STAR CHALLENGE AT DISNEY'S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS® COMPLEX

For those still thinking of attending the Inaugural Walt Disney World All-Star Challenge in November, event registration will close next week. There are only about 15 of the discounted Disney room packages still available for teams, so be sure to sign up in the next week if your team does plan to enter. You can find the specific event information here.

2009 VEX ROBOTICS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP VIDEO

The VRC World Championship video can now be found and viewed on the VEX Robotics Competition page on RobotEvents. Teams and Event Partners are welcome to use the video to help promote your efforts and recruit more support. We hope it's helpful.

REGIONAL COLLEGE CHALLENGE EVENTS NOW AVAILABLE

The College Challenge now has some new regional competitions available for teams to play at before the World Championship in April. We know many VEX High School graduates want to keep expanding their engineering skills in college, so we look forward to seeing many of them in the College Challenge this year. While we anticipate more regional College Challenge events getting started over the next year, at this point there still aren't regional events available in many areas of the country. With that in mind, we will still allow open registration for the College Challenge World Championship for the first 36 college teams that sign up (meaning they do not have to play somewhere else or qualify to attend). The 2010 VEX Robotics College Challenge World Championship already has more teams set to attend than participated last year, so be sure to get your team signed up if you want to get one of the 36 guaranteed spots.
