Robotics Meeting 4/13

We had a great meeting this week! Looks like we have the cRio put together and we are acquiring our 4 Jaguar speed controllers and our chassis that we ordered. We have a descent tool set now and are ready to move on our next build. Click here to see our new chassis that includes a direct Mecanum drive! I have put up some new links to the documentation if you would like to take a look at it before our build next Tuesday at 2:00. Hope to see you all there!

Also, comment here or send me an email if you think of anything that should be included in my next shopping trip besides a good screwdriver set and a battery charger.

Meetings are now from 2-4p in E-105

Please comment here if you can/can't make it.

We're looking at making a droid-type unit with a Mecanum drive system. This seems to be the consensus of the group. There has also been some interest in adding some type of a launcher that can be targeted to the robot, mounting a camera so it can be driven remotely and having an autonomous component to the programming so that it performs pre-programmed tasks. Please comment if you have additional or even better ideas for us.

This Tuesday we should be doing a lesson in basic electronics and then engaging in the design process. I look forward to seeing you there!

Greetings Teams,

We hope 2010 is off to a great start for everyone! After a brief break for the holidays, the VEX competition season is back in full swing, as over 100 teams competed last weekend at events in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Nebraska. This week there will be about 150 more teams competing at events in California, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

2010 VEX World Championship Expansion and Registration

Due to overwhelming demand and the number of teams who have already qualified and registered for the 2010 World Championship, we are proud to announce that the 2010 VEX World Championship will be expanded to four full divisions this year, along with a fifth division for the College Challenge. Registered teams will compete in either the Science, Technology, Engineering or Math division, with the 4 division Champions meeting to determine the 2010 World Champions. So even with the increased number of teams, do not worry - we have secured more space at the Dallas Convention Center to ensure there is room for over 300 teams, more divisions, the skills challenges, a huge practice field area, an even larger food court and an even bigger Team Celebration Party at the conclusion of the competition. If your team has qualified for and plans to attend the 2010 World Championship, be sure to register online soon to ensure your spot while space is still available. We can't wait to see all the top teams from around the world April 22-24 in Dallas.

2010 VEX World Championship Agenda and Hotel Information

The 2010 VRC World Championship Schedule and Agenda is now posted on the RobotEvents.com VRC World Championship Event Page. As teams qualify, be sure to register to ensure your spot and book your hotel rooms to get the discounted room rates before they fill up (a couple are close to full already). The three hotels offering special World Championship discounts for VEX teams can be found on the event page on RobotEvents.com.

2010 VEX World Championship Volunteers Needed

For those interested in volunteering at the 2010 VEX World Championship, the online signup site is now up and running. We once again need your help to deliver this opportunity to students from around the world. If you are able to volunteer, please sign up at http://robotevents.com/volunteer/. More information about volunteering can be found there as well. To everyone who does volunteer to help run the 2010 VEX World Championship, let us thank you in advance - this incredible event and the opportunity for over 300 teams and thousands of students from the around the world to participate would not be possible without your dedication and passion!

Online Challenges Are Now Posted

The details for the 2010 Online Design Challenges have now been posted on RobotEvents.com. The variety of design challenges available for students to participate in is bigger this year, with six different challenges: Autodesk® Inventor® Digital Prototyping Challenge, FUTURE Foundation Product Design Challenge, Design a Game Animation Challenge, Promotional Video Challenge, Web Site Design Challenge and VEX Essay contest. The site will open for submissions in late January, but all the details are up now and can be found at http://forum.robotevents.com/design/, so let the designing begin!

Best wishes and good luck the rest of the season,

VEX Robotics Competition

Looking to get ahead of the competition this summer? Interested in the genetic origins of human disease and the laboratory technologies it takes to reveal them? If so, the Helios Scholars Program at TGen might be just what you've been looking for.

The Helios Scholars Program at TGen is a paid, eight-week biomedical summer internship open to Arizona high school, undergraduate, graduate and medical students. Interns develop foundational research skills through first-hand experience as they pursue careers in science or medical-related fields.

The program provides students with the opportunity to work under the mentorship of an experienced investigator, while working side-by-side with TGen researchers and their scientific teams. Students will work to elucidate the mysteries and mechanisms of genetic diseases such as Alzheimer's, ALS, autism, breast cancer, prostate cancer, melanoma and diabetes, as well as infectious diseases such as influenza.

The program capstone includes participation in a formal symposium where interns communicate the findings of their research and reflect on what they have learned and accomplished throughout their tenure at TGen.

Past interns boast an array of impressive accomplishments – publishing scientific abstracts and articles, and gaining acceptance into medical and graduate schools. Please check out http://www.tgen.org/intern for more information and details of recent Helios Scholars alumni successes.
